3 reasons to niche down as a writing coach

To niche or not? Discover why niching can be the game-changer in your writing coaching business.

“Should I niche or should I not be niching?”, “Is being a writing coach already not niche enough?”,…It is one of the most recurring questions my writing coaches have. As I tell them, and as you will learn in this article, niching can make all the difference in your writing coaching business.

  1. Expertise

By having a specific focus, you allow yourself to create expertise in that specific niche you serve. For example, you are a business book writing coach. You help entrepreneurs to develop and write their business books. By only focusing on this specific genre, you get to know the industry inside out. What are the latest tendencies? What agent might be more interested than another one for your client’s book? And with expertise comes added value. You will be able to give more specific, personalized, and valuable information to any of your clients.

2. Marketing

Or, in other words, how to simplify your life by having your specific niche. You no longer have to put out your marketing materials on every single social media or talk to anyone and everyone about what you do. By having your specific niche, you know exactly where to go to talk to your authors and get them interested in your services. For example, you are a romance book coach, exclusively working with writers who want to publish a romance book. The only thing you have to do is to identify associations, Facebook groups, etc. which cater specifically to your romance writers. As such, you will go from endless marketing with no results to focused marketing efforts that will help you to be book solid in no time.

3. Competition

Last but not least, you are setting yourself apart from the competition. Let me take a real-life example. If you are looking for a hairdresser, would you have more confidence in the one that solely cuts hair, or the one that also offers gardening and cooking services? It is the same in your writing coaching business. A writer with a specific genre will be more interested in working with you and your specific knowledge than a generalist writing coach who might not be able to offer that expertise.

4. Referral marketing

Not convinced yet? Let me give you a fourth reason: referrals! By having a niche, you make it easy for people to drop your name when they meet a writer looking for a coach just like you. We are all overwhelmed by the amount of information that is out there. But by having a niche, people will be impressed and have your name on top of their minds. Referral marketing is one of the most successful tools to get more and better quality leads at a lower cost. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by!
